Chapter 14

Music

I woke up with a headache. I didn’t know that alcohol will give me this kind of hangover. That would probably be the last time I’ll drink. It didn’t even taste good.

I slightly slapped myself when I remembered what I said and what I did last night. It was embarrassing. How am I supposed to face Isaac now? I swear, I will never drink again.

I took a bath thinking that it will take the headache away, but it became worst. I feel like my head is throbbing in so much pain.

I got out of the bathroom and my eyes widen automatically when I saw Lydia and Cath sitting on the sofa while talking. They looked at me as if I did something wrong. When in fact, they’re the ones who came here without even knocking!

“How did you both get in–” I was cut off when Lydia showed me a piece of ice that looked exactly like my key. She used her power again to open my door.

I bit my lip to avoid being angry. I should put a lot of locks on that freaking door!

“I smell alcohol. You drank last night?” Cath asked. I wore my uniform inside the bathroom and went out to fix my hair. We’re already late for breakfast because of me. I shouldn’t have drunk last night. I keep on messing up.

“I did,” I answered sparingly, and we left the dorm together. We walked in the busy hallway towards the cafeteria. A lot of students greeted us again, but I couldn’t even smile back because of my headache. I need to drink coffee at least.

“For sure Isaac will be angry when he finds out that you took alcohol from the cellar,” Lydia said. I couldn’t answer. He knew. He knew very well because he was with me last night. And I even asked him to stay beside me until I fall asleep. That’s so stupid of me.

“After our classes, we’ll be having our training,” Cath explained to me. When we arrived at the cafeteria there were a lot of students occupying the tables already.

“Hey!” I glanced at Kurt’s direction. Kristian and Kurt were sitting in front of a long table that was far different from the other table. It was much cleaner and the clothing in it looks expensive. Maybe, that table belongs to them. Whatever. I’m not even part of them.

I was about to walk away when Lydia grabbed my arm. “Where are you going? You’re part of us now. Let’s go.” Then she pulled me. We started eating, they also started talking about how much they look forward to the upcoming tournament. They are looking forward to that.

They stopped talking when a familiar guy stood upright on my back. I couldn’t even look back because of embarrassment. No matter how much I avoid him, our paths will surely be crossed.

“Look who’s here!” Kurt stood up and walked behind me. “Isaac will join us today.” I averted my gaze when Kurt pulled him toward the seat in front of me. What made me feel conscious is that he keeps on staring at me. The others even noticed how he looks at me.

“Does your head hurts?” he asked. I closed my eyes and immediately shook my head. I can’t look at him.

Isaac, please stop this. I want to tell him that. I want him to stop making my heartbeat this fast.

“Wait, wait, wait…” Lydia motioned her hand as if she doesn’t understand what was happening. “You knew she drank last night?” All of them looked at us full of suspicion.

Isaac didn’t answer. Instead, he hands me a cup of coffee. “Drink that. It will lessen the headache.” I looked intently at the cup and glanced at him, he was still staring at me and his green eyes were glowing as usual.

His well-brushed-up hair made him stand out even more. He’s wearing the same uniform as the others, yet he’s much more attractive. And why am I complimenting him in this kind of situation?

“Then how about us?!” Kurt smirked but Isaac glared at him. “Just kidding! I think I should eat.” Kristian and the others laughed as well as Isaac. But I couldn’t even smile. Is this a joke to him? Is he making fun of me now just because I let my guard down last night and asked him to stay?

If this is a joke to him, it’s not funny. I feel like my chest will explode any minute from now and it’s crazy to think that I only feel this way when Isaac’s around.

I stood up and held a cup of coffee. “You know what? It’s yours, Kurt. I don’t drink coffee.” I put it in front of Kurt. I could feel their confused gaze on me and Isaac’s blank expression. “I’m done here.”

I walked back to my dorm and slept. I don’t want to attend any of my scheduled classes. I needed that coffee, but I can’t accept it knowing that it was from Isaac. I want him to stop doing this to me.

When I woke up, I looked at the wall clock. It’s almost time for the training. I shouldn’t be late. I’ve missed some training already; it would be hard for me to keep up if I didn’t train now.

I walked toward the training room and passed by the music room. I was immediately taken aback when I heard the familiar melody of a song being played. The door was slightly ajar, so I peeked in to see who was playing that song.

There I saw Isaac holding a guitar with a serious expression on his face. His eyes were shut, and he started to sing.

“And you look as beautiful as ever, and I swear that every day you get better,” he strummed the guitar. His voice echoed in the whole room and I can’t help but admire him even more. “You made me feel this way somehow.”

He stopped and I was surprised when he turned to me. I stepped back and shook my head in embarrassment. He saw me staring at him. This is getting worst and worst every single time he’s around.

I was about to walk away when the door flung open.

“Hey, stay for a while.” I was frozen when he said that. I walked back inside the music room and I just watched him play and sing. His voice gave a shiver down my spine. He’s good at it.

Knowing that he could sing, I can tell that he was almost perfect. But he’s rude, he’s short-tempered, he’s intimidating, he even has a dirty mouth, yet why am I feeling like this towards him?

“Music can calm me that’s why I’m here,” he said. He put down the guitar and stood up. I guess something is bothering him that’s why he needed to calm down.

“You are bothered,” I stated. It’s written all over his face. The way his hand strums the guitar, it was rough and almost out of tune. He chuckled because of what I said.

“By you…” I was surprised. I didn’t expect him to say that.

“Let’s go to the training room. They are waiting for us,” he said then walked away. Is he bothered by me as much as I’m bothered about him? I wish he knew how hard it is for me every time he’s around.

When we got to the training room, Isaac and I looked at each other at the same time. They already wore their fighting gear. Maybe they were waiting for us earlier.

“We didn’t know you’re that close and you even came here at the same time,” Kristian said. He sounded like he was teasing us again.

“I guess they spent a little time together,” Kurt whispered but we heard it. Isaac sighed in annoyance and glared at Kurt.

“When you’re done talking nonsense, we’ll start.” Isaac went to the table full of weapons, while Kurt and Kristian laughed because of his reaction.

“So hot-headed,” Kurt muttered but because he was close to me, I heard that so I just couldn’t help but laugh. They want to piss off Isaac every time.

“Let’s start!” Isaac shouted. He gave us a paper written Who’s our opponent for today. I frowned when I read who. Lydia. She’s not put in the shooter’s position for no reason. She’s really good in combat fighting and on top of that, she’s skilled in using weapons as well. I’m doomed.

“Cath and Kristian will be the first. Kurt, start the simulator,” Isaac ordered. Kurt opened the simulator and the fight started. I was amazed by their ways of using their power to fight.

Cath is good at using fire. Kristian, on the other hand, is good at using water. They mastered it and keep on pushing their limits. No one gives up and that’s what I like about this team.

A few minutes later, the match ended, and no one seemed to have won. They have the same strength and ability. Amazing.

“Next fight, me and Kurt,” Isaac said. He smirked but Kurt bit his lips. “It’s payback time.”

“Hey, take it easy–” Kurt was cut off when Isaac yelled.

“Start the simulator!” he said then Kristian followed immediately. They started fighting. I was shocked to see how good Isaac was when it came to fighting. He’s so focused that even if you’re much stronger than him, he can beat you.

He doesn’t want to lose. He wants you to be serious when it comes to such things. And I can’t help but admire his capacity when it comes to fighting. Seriously, he’s good at everything.

Their fight ended immediately because Isaac defeated Kurt who knelt on the ground. But Isaac didn’t seem tired at all.

“Next fight. Lydia and Althea!” I gasped when I heard my name. I looked at Lydia and her eyes were fiercer than usual. Her eyes even glowed.

“Good luck, ‘Thea.”

“Y-Yeah,” I said. I know Lydia. She will not take it easy on me. They all have abilities that I do not have. But it is the same for me. I may be average compared to them, but the truth is, I can now use any of my powers.

“Let’s start!”
