Chapter 8

Persephone stared at the fire that was burning in front of her. Her phone started to ring.

She pulled it out and slid her finger across the screen to answer it. She put it up to her ear.

“Well?”

“It’s done.”

“Are you sure?”

“There was no movement coming from the vehicle, and the engine had caught fire from the damage of the fall. I heard an explosion shortly after I had pulled away from the site.”

“Was there anyone else around to see the accident?”

“No, the road was deserted when I hit them.”

“Excellent. You should be getting your payment soon enough.”

“Thank you.”

She ended the call.

She continued to stare into the fire, she watched as the flames danced around. She muttered an incantation softly over the fire. She pulled out a vial that held some liquid as she opened it, and poured it over the fire. She closed her eyes as she continued to chant. She started to see visions of the accident that occurred not too long ago. She smiled when she saw the vehicle head over the ravine and watched as the vehicle tumbled and rolled. She sighed in relief when she was able to confirm what the hired hand had told her, but then her eyebrows furrowed as she watched all the people that were in the vehicle start to walk away from the burning car and then jump when it exploded. She opened her eyes. She could feel the anger burn inside her.

The hybrid still lived.

She opened her phone and pulled up her contacts and, clicked on a name, then raised the phone to her ear.

“Kill him. He failed to do his job,” she told them.

“Done.”

Was the only thing she heard from the other line before they disconnected.

Persephone stood there as she continued to watch the flames as she tried to cool her temper. She needed to get rid of this monstrosity before her powers grew, and she tried to control the covens. She was tired of living in fear of the wolves and the Lycans. She vowed that she would never allow her coven to be controlled ever again.

She took a deep breath, turned away from the fire, and walked back toward her cottage. It was time that she went and visited an old friend.

Amanda woke up the next morning feeling exhausted. It was another rough night, and she barely got any sleep. She looked over at her roommate, who looked to be sleeping soundly.

Lucky.

She pulled the covers back and decided to get up. She quickly dressed and headed out the door.

When she walked out of her dorm hall, she started to make her way to the dining hall when she heard:

“Good Morning, small girl.”

She turned to see Deak leaning up against the wall.

“Deak!” She exclaimed as she walked over and gave him a hug.

He wrapped his arms around his little friend.

“How are you, small girl?” He asked softly.

She leaned back to look up at her at him. She lifted her brow at him as she continued to stare at him.

“Did Hudson call you?” She asked him.

Deak shook his head.

“I got a call from Ruby,” he confessed.

Yep, that sounded about right.

Amanda pulled back from Deak and stared down at the ground instead of answering his question.

Deak continued to look down at his small friend/cousin. They had yet to really talk about how they were related, but they would get to that soon enough. He was more concerned about how she was handling all of this. She had been dealt a heavy hand, but in the end, she was the one to save them all.

“I’ll wait till you’re ready to talk.” He told her as he went back to leaning against the wall.

Amanda rolled her eyes.

“Come have breakfast with me, and we can talk,” she offered.

Deak nodded.

He pulled himself away from the wall and walked with Amanda to the dining hall.

After Amanda got her tray filled with her choice of options for breakfast, they found a table that was vacant and distant from the other tables.

Deak pulled out the chair for Amanda to sit down at before he pulled one out for himself.

“Thank you,” Amanda said softly.

Deak nodded.

Amanda let out a sigh as she grabbed her fork and started to poke at her food. She knew she was stalling, and she could feel the stare that was coming from her friend Deak.

“I don’t have any memory of what I did that day,” she started with.

Deak leaned back in his seat and crossed his arms.

“Nothing?”

“I only get small clips of it when I’m dreaming, it’s like I black out completely when my wolf is in control,” she soaked in.

Deak nodded you’re not sleeping, does she speak to you?” he asked her.

Amanda shook her head.

Deak leaned forward and rested his arms on the table in front of him.

“What about magic?”

She shook her head as she looked around them to make sure no one was within earshot of their conversation.

“It’s like my wolf is the only one that can tap into it,” she whispered.

Deak rubbed his face with his hand. He didn’t know how to answer her questions about her wolf. A Lycan werewolf was different from a shifter wolf. But he could try to help her with her magic.

“Have you spoken to Zachary?” he asked.

She shook her head.

“Only a few people know what’s really going on. While rumors spread that I’m some amazing hybrid,” she said with sarcasm in her voice.

Deak smirked.

“The rumors will fade once classes start up again,” he told her to calm her.

Amanda shrugged.

“I just hate being the center of attention. I’m not used to that, and it makes me uncomfortable.”

Deak sighed, “Give it time, small girl. All eyes are on you, you are something rare, and they don’t know what you are capable of.”

Amanda shrugged, “I guess.”

Amanda took a bite of her food. It calmed a little of her anxiousness.

“Keep eating, it will help.”

Amanda took a few more bites and then sighed as her body started to calm more.

Deak leaned back into his seat as he watched Amanda eat.

“So?” he started with.

Amanda looked up at him, confused.

“So what?” she asked him in between bites.

Deak took out his finger and started to make imaginary swirls on the table.

“I was curious if you had heard from Vita.” He said as he looked down at the table and not at Amanda.

Amanda sat there as she had her fork in one hand and her other arm resting on the table in front of her plate.

“How do you know Vita?” she asked him.

Deak looked down at the table, trying to avoid Amanda’s stare.

“Deak?” she wasn’t going to let it go until he answered her question.

Deak huffed.

“Vita is mate, and I have yet to meet with her since the first moment,” he admitted.
